Professor Stewart and Michael Clinch recall the demolition of Charlton Village and the launch of the Brabazon
“And of course the thing about the Brabazon was they created this great long runway, fantastic, and they had in fact to destroy a village didn’t they”
“They did”
“What was the name of the village?”
“Do you know I can’t remember”
“Was it Little Compton or a name like that?”
“Was it Charlton?”
“That’s right and they destroyed that village to build that runway, and in fact when the aircraft took off it didn’t go very far at all and just rose up straight away, do you remember? And do you remember when they had the rollout of the Brabazon?”
“Yes, I do”
“And they brought it out of the hangars and we all went and had a look at it.”
“Yeah we did. We all gathered round and they opened the doors of the hangar and the Brabazon came out, and it was immense.”
“And that Brabazon hangar was later used for the Concorde, and it still is there now as well, of course, and it’s fantastic.”
